I can’t help but be amazed by the history in A Song of Ice and Fire. Like there’s a 12,000 something years history of Westeros, generations upon generations of all the different houses, history of how the Targaryens rose to power, and all that shit.

Oh, I know. They have ballads and stories about stories that we’re only half aware of. Like the Rains of Castamere. It’s ridiculous.
Yea I love that, Rains of Castamere, just a little bit of Lannister history but it explains a whole lot about Tywin and his father as well as the general respect(and fear) people have for the Lannisters.
And despite of all the canon material there’s still enough room for theories, and that’s honestly one of the best parts. I love that we’re invited to analyze the story and the background of the characters, to think and guess how everything is connected(like the R+L=J theory), to be part of telling the story, although of course ultimately George will make the story go however he wants. And I mean sure, many authors do that, I think, but not on such a high level. There are so many characters, fully developed each with their own background story and most of them interact with eachother so you get all these intertwining stories, and holy crap it’s just. so. fucking. huge.
I really, really love this type of storytelling, and I think it takes a certain skill to write a story where the reader feels like they’re discovering the world by themselves and not simply being led through it on a carefully constructed path. George is definitely one of the best authors I’ve ever come across. I’m out of words, it’s so fucking impressive, all of it.
